About this dua

When. In the morning, and it is commonly attached to the time just after the dawn prayer — the start of the day on which provision will actually be sought. It is short enough to be said before leaving for work, which is where it belongs.

The words. 'Ilman nafi'an: knowledge with an adjective doing the filtering. Nafi' means what benefits, so the request is not for more information but for the kind that changes something — which quietly concedes that the other kind exists and can be accumulated for years. Rizqan wasi'an is the phrase most often mistranslated. Wasi' is not "much"; it is wide, roomy, having margin. What is asked for is not a large sum but space — enough that the month is not calculated to the last day. And rizq itself is broader than money: it is whatever a person is provided with, so health, work, a household and time are all inside the word.

The third request changes the subject. After knowledge and provision comes shifa'an min kulli da', healing from every disease. It sits there without transition, and the effect is a reminder of proportion: the first two are worth nothing to a person who cannot get up.

All three are open-ended. No subject is named for the knowledge, no amount for the provision, no illness for the cure. Requests specified that tightly tend to be requests for a plan the speaker has already made. This one leaves the details where they belong.

What it does not do. It does not ask for wealth, and ghina — sufficiency — is what the wider tradition of supplication asks for instead. Read alongside the request for guidance, piety, restraint and self-sufficiency, this one is the practical half of the same attitude.
