About this dua

When. Whenever istighfar is said, and this passage in particular is remembered by people whose difficulty is material — a closed door at work, a debt that will not shift, land that will not yield.

The words. It is Qur'an, Nuh 71:10-12, and it is Nuh speaking to his people. Ghaffara is an intensive form of the word for forgiveness: not simply one who forgives but one who forgives abundantly and repeatedly. The form itself answers the objection of someone who has asked before.

Midrara comes from darr, the flowing of milk — rain described with the vocabulary of a nursing animal, continuous and freely given rather than measured out. Then yumdidkum, from madd, extension: provision described as something stretched out and prolonged, not handed over once.

The structure. Notice what is asked and what is offered. The command is to seek forgiveness — a matter entirely between a person and Allah. What follows is rain, wealth, children, gardens and rivers in the verses after. The passage links an inward act to outward provision without explaining the mechanism.

How it is read. Many commentators take the connection at face value and treat istighfar as a cause of relief in worldly matters. What the verse does not do is set terms: it does not say when, or how much, or that a specific person's specific difficulty will lift on a schedule.

In practice. The words most people repeat are the short formula of istighfar itself; this passage is the reason many of them started.
