Dua for the home (blessing)

When. On moving into a house, and afterwards — many say it on crossing the threshold each day, or once at the start of a new chapter in a home: a marriage, a birth, a return after a long absence. It is a supplication in ordinary words rather than a fixed transmitted formula, so it can be shortened or added to.

The words. Bayt is the word for a house, and it is built from the root for spending the night. A bayt is not a structure; it is where you pass the dark hours. That is worth holding while reading the three things asked for it.

Sakinah. The middle request is the one that repays attention. Sakinah is stillness that settles — and the root s-k-n also gives sakan, a dwelling place, and maskan, a residence. The Qur'an uses this connection directly: Allah made your houses a sakan for you (an-Nahl 16:80). So asking for a house of sakinah is asking for it to be what its own name already claims it is. Many houses are not.

The three together. Khayr is goodness in what happens there; sakinah is the quality of its air; rahmah is how the people in it treat one another. A house can have the first without the third, which is a recognisable kind of household.
