Dua of Ibrahim for righteous offspring

When. When asking for a child, and when asking for one's existing children. It is not a fertility formula; it is a Qur'anic sentence about what a person asks for when they ask for offspring.

The words. Hab lī — from و-ه-ب, to give as a gift. Not aʿṭinī (give me), not a request for what is owed or earned: hiba is what is bestowed freely, with no claim behind it. The choice of verb concedes the point before the request is finished.

Min aṣ-ṣāliḥīn — "from among the righteous". This is the clause that carries the supplication. The request is not for a child and then, separately, for that child to turn out well. The description is inside the thing asked for. Ibrahim does not ask for a son; he asks for a righteous one, and the grammar leaves no room to take the first without the second.

Where it sits. The Qur'an gives it at as-Saffat 37:100, immediately before the account of what he was then asked to do with the son he was given. The sequence is not decoration: the request and the trial are placed next to each other.

How it is used. Recited by those hoping for children and by parents for the children they have — the wording fits both, since ṣāliḥīn is not a stage anyone ages out of. No count is attached to it.
