سُورَةُ المُطَفِّفِينَ

Surah Al-Mutaffifin

Defrauding · 36 verses · Meccan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

About this surah

The name. Al-Mutaffifin means "Those Who Give Short Measure," or "Defrauding," from its opening woe pronounced on those who take full measure when they buy from others but give less when they measure or weigh out for them (83:1-3) — a condemnation of a specific, everyday commercial dishonesty rather than an abstract wrong. It is Meccan, and grounds its case for the Hereafter in a practice its earliest audience would have recognized directly from the marketplace.

What it is known for. The surah is known for its warning to those who give short measure, followed by a contrast between the record of the wicked, sealed in a place called Sijjin, and the record of the righteous, sealed in a place called 'Illiyyun, witnessed by those brought near to Allah (83:7-21). It also carries a description of the disbelievers in this life laughing at those who believed, and a promise reversed on the Day of Judgment, when it will be the believers who laugh, watching from raised couches (83:29-36).

Reading it. At 36 ayahs it is a mid-short surah, read comfortably in one sitting. It opens with a concrete commercial wrong before widening into the fate of the two records and the reversal of who laughs at whom, so a first-time reader should notice how a very specific, mundane starting point opens onto the surah's larger concern with ultimate accountability.
