الْمُصَوِّر

Al-Musawwir

The Fashioner

Deepens gratitude for one's form and abilities.

The root. Al-Musawwir comes from s-w-r, the root behind ṣūra (form, image, shape) and taṣwīr (depicting, giving form). What the root carries is the specific, recognizable shape a thing takes — not existence itself, but the particular outline, feature, and appearance by which one created thing is told apart from another. Al-Musawwir is built on an intensive pattern, naming one who does this shaping across every single thing rather than only occasionally.

What it means here. Al-Musawwir is the third of the linked creation names, following Al-Khaliq and Al-Bari': where the first originates and decrees, and the second brings into distinct existence, Al-Musawwir gives the particular form a thing is known by — the shape, feature, and detail that make one face, one leaf, one creature recognizably itself and not another. Together the three names describe creation as decree, emergence, and form, each a distinct stage rather than a repetition of the one before it.

Where it is met. Al-Musawwir appears only once in the Quran, closing the same verse of Surah al-Hashr that names Al-Khaliq and Al-Bari' before it — the verse ends by stating that His are the most beautiful names, tying this triad directly to the wider subject of the ninety-nine.
