الْبَارِئ

Al-Bari'

The Originator

Recited for health and freedom from affliction.

The root. Al-Bari' comes from b-r-a, a root whose core sense is being free or clear of something — the same root gives Arabic barā'a, innocence or a clean discharge from a claim, and the verb used for recovering fully from an illness. Applied to creation, the sense carried over is of bringing something out into an existence separate and distinct from everything else, disentangled from any material or model it might have come from — creation as a clean, unconditioned emergence rather than an assembly from parts.

What it means here. Al-Bari' is read as the second of the three linked creation-names: where Al-Khaliq originates and decrees a thing's measure, Al-Bari' is the actual bringing of it into distinct existence, separate and whole in itself rather than remaining only a design. The distinction between the two is fine but real — Al-Khaliq is closer to intending and shaping the plan, Al-Bari' to the plan becoming an actual, separate thing in the world.

Where it is met. Al-Bari' appears only once in the Quran, in the same verse of Surah al-Hashr as Al-Khaliq and Al-Musawwir — it does not occur independently anywhere else in the text, which makes it one of the rarer names covered on this page.
