الْمُهَيْمِن

Al-Muhaymin

The Guardian and Overseer

Reminds one that Allah watches over every affair.

The root. Al-Muhaymin is built on a four-letter root, h-y-m-n, rather than the usual three — a shape Arabic uses sparingly, for words that carry a compact, specific sense rather than a wide family of relatives. Linguists trace it to a sense of watching over and taking charge of something so closely that nothing in it escapes notice. Because the root produces so few other words, Al-Muhaymin does not carry the wide web of related meanings that a name like Ar-Rahman does — its meaning sits almost entirely in this one word.

What it means here. Al-Muhaymin names Allah as the one who watches over, oversees, and safeguards all things at once — every state, every deed, every creature under constant, total observation, with nothing hidden from it and nothing left unattended. Grouped with Al-Mu'min just before it, the two names work together: Al-Mu'min grants security and confirms truth, while Al-Muhaymin is the unbroken watching that stands behind that confirmation — nothing is vouched for that is not first fully known.

Where it is met. Al-Muhaymin appears only once in the Quran, in the same verse of Surah al-Hashr as Al-Malik, Al-Quddus, As-Salam, and Al-Mu'min — the rarest name in that cluster, occurring nowhere else in the text. Outside the Quran it is invoked in supplications asking Allah's oversight over an affair a person cannot watch over themselves.
