Al-Muqeet

The Sustainer

Trust that every soul's nourishment is assured.

The root. Al-Muqeet comes from q-w-t, the root behind qūt, the exact measure of sustenance a body needs to stay alive — not abundance, but precisely enough. Classical lexicographers also read the same root as carrying the sense of power to bring something about, so that muqīt names not just a giver of provision but one who has the standing to see that provision reaches its measure. Al-Muqeet is shaped on the faʿīl pattern, naming this as a settled capacity rather than a single act of giving.

What it means here. Al-Muqeet is read as the one who assigns and delivers to every living thing exactly what sustains it — not a general abundance dispensed at random, but a measured provision fitted to what each creature actually needs. Some early commentators extended the reading beyond food to any consequence a person is owed for what they have done, tying the name to a kind of exact accounting close in spirit to Al-Haseeb, though Al-Muqeet is read primarily through nourishment and Al-Haseeb through reckoning.

Where it is met. Al-Muqeet appears only once in the Quran, in Surah An-Nisa, in a verse about intercession: whoever intercedes for good or ill shares in its outcome, "and Allah is Muqeet over all things" — a single, indefinite occurrence, unlike the frequently repeated names on this page. Outside the Quran, the name is invoked mainly in reflection on provision, a reminder that what sustains a person was measured out rather than left to chance.
