Al-Jaleel
The Majestic
The root. Al-Jaleel comes from j-l-l, the root behind jalāl (majesty, grandeur) and ajall (more considerable, weightier in standing). Something jalīl commands a kind of respect that has nothing to do with familiarity — the opposite pole in Arabic to what is small or trivial. Where names like Al-Kabeer and Al-Azeem name greatness through size or weight, this root names greatness through the reverence it draws out of anyone who beholds it.
What it means here. Al-Jaleel is read as the majesty that makes Allah worthy of the deepest reverence and honor, a standing so far above anything created that nothing else can rightly claim the same regard. It is closely related to jalāl, the word used directly in the Quran, though the exact form Al-Jaleel — as a name applied to Allah — belongs to the tradition that gathered the ninety-nine rather than to the Quranic text word for word.
Where it is met. The root j-l-l itself appears twice in the Quran, both in Surah Ar-Rahman, in the phrase dhū al-jalāli wa-l-ikrām, "Possessor of Majesty and Honor," once describing the face of Allah that remains when all else passes away, and again closing the surah in praise of His blessed name. Al-Jaleel as a standalone title of this exact shape is not itself a Quranic word; it entered the traditional list of the ninety-nine names drawn from this root's Quranic sense of majesty rather than from a verse naming Allah with the word directly.
