الْمُجِيب

Al-Mujeeb

The Responsive One

Confidence that supplications are answered.

The root. Al-Mujeeb comes from j-w-b, the root behind jawāb (an answer, a reply) and ijāba (responding to a call). What the root carries is completion of an exchange — a call made and met, not left hanging. Al-Mujeeb is shaped as an active participle on an intensive reading, naming a readiness to respond that holds for every call rather than an answer given on one occasion.

What it means here. Al-Mujeeb is read as the one who answers every call made to Him, whatever form the caller's need takes — a request, a distress, a wordless turning of the heart. It is often read alongside Al-Qareeb, "the Near," the two names explaining each other: nearness is what makes a response possible at all, and the response is what nearness is for. Unlike a name that names knowledge or power in the abstract, Al-Mujeeb describes an active relationship, something that happens between Allah and the one who calls.

Where it is met. Al-Mujeeb is spoken by the prophet Salih to his people in Surah Hud, describing his Lord as near and responsive. Surah As-Saffat recounts Nuh's prayer and calls Allah and those who answer him the best of responders, using the same root in its plural form. The word ijāba, response to prayer, appears throughout the Quran in Allah's own promise that He answers the call of whoever calls upon Him.
