Ar-Raqeeb

The Watchful

Develops constant God-consciousness (muraqabah).

The root. Ar-Raqeeb comes from r-q-b, the root behind raqāba (watching, keeping careful observation) and murāqaba, the ongoing awareness of being watched that the tradition treats as the heart of mindfulness in worship. What the root carries is not a glance but a sustained, attentive watch — the kind kept over something whose condition might change and needs to be tracked continuously. Ar-Raqeeb is shaped on the faʿīl pattern, naming this watchfulness as unbroken rather than occasional.

What it means here. Ar-Raqeeb is read as the watch that never lapses over every creature's condition and every deed, near enough to see what a person does the instant they do it. It is closely tied to the practice the tradition calls murāqaba — living with the constant awareness of being watched by Him — which gives the name a use beyond description: it is invoked as the ground of conscience itself, the reason a private act is never actually private.

Where it is met. Ar-Raqeeb is spoken directly by Isa in Surah Al-Ma'ida, telling Allah that once he was taken up, "You were the Watcher over them" — Allah's watching described in the very words of a prophet addressing Him. Surah An-Nisa opens by stating plainly that Allah is ever a watcher over His creation, tying the name to the accountability owed to family and kin named in the same verse.
