The imam is read by whether the dreamer leads, follows, or watches. Praying behind an imam whose recitation is sound is the settled good reading: being under guidance one can rely on, a matter arranged correctly. Leading the prayer oneself was read as taking on responsibility for people, and the older interpreters were careful with it — the reading is not honour alone but answerability for those standing behind. Leading and making mistakes, or losing one's place, is read as a responsibility taken up before one was ready, and they read it as a call to prepare rather than as a disgrace. Following an imam who errs and not correcting him was read as going along with something known to be wrong. Seeing an imam who faces the wrong direction is a leadership pointed away from where it should be. An imam who will not begin is a matter waiting on someone else's decision. Seeing a known scholar or teacher in this position shifts the dream onto what the dreamer takes from that person.
The word is not a title in origin: imām means simply the one in front, from the same root as amām, before or ahead. In the Qur'an it is used of Ibrahim being made a leader for people (al-Baqara 2:124) and in the supplication of the servants of the Merciful to be made imāms for the God-conscious (al-Furqan 25:74). The dream reading follows the word's own sense: whoever is in front is the one others' actions are timed to, and everything that follows from that — the trust, the exposure, the responsibility — belongs to the symbol.
A dream of leading prayer is not a rank, not evidence of piety, and not an instruction to seek any position. The interpreters held that no one's standing with Allah is settled by what he sees asleep. It gives no ruling. If the dream left you uneasy about yourself, the taught response is still the right one: seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and leave it untold.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
