Dreaming of Insects in Islam

Insects are read by their number, whether they bite, and where they are. A few insects, easily brushed away, are the standard reading: small vexations, people who irritate without being able to harm, worries with more noise in them than weight. Insects in great numbers, swarming, changes the reading entirely — many weak things together are not weak, and the older interpreters read a swarm as a matter that overwhelms by accumulation rather than by force. Biting or stinging insects shift it from nuisance to an actual harm, usually a small one and usually from someone close enough to reach you. Insects in food or in the house are read as something spoiling from inside a place that should have been kept clean, and this reading extends to a household or a business. Killing them is read as putting an end to a small trouble; being unable to be rid of them as a vexation that keeps returning because its source has not been dealt with. Insects on someone else shifts the reading to that person's affairs.

The basis is the plain nature of the thing. An insect cannot overthrow anyone; it can only wear a person down. That is why the whole chapter reads as annoyance rather than danger. The Qur'an itself uses small creatures to make exactly this point — that Allah does not disdain to give a parable of a mosquito or anything above it (al-Baqara 2:26) — and elsewhere the locust appears as a plague that works by number (al-A'raf 7:133). Insignificance and overwhelming quantity are two readings of one creature.

A dream of insects is not a sign of illness, filth or infestation, and not a judgement on your house or your health. It is not a ruling and does not report anything to come. A single real itch in the night is enough to produce it. If it disgusted or unsettled you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and leave the dream unspoken.
