Dreaming of Jug in Islam

A jug is read by what is in it and by who is holding it. A full jug of clean water is the settled good reading: provision held in a safe place, and someone trustworthy holding it — the older interpretations read vessels as servants and stewards, the people through whose hands a household's good passes. An empty jug turns toward a promise with nothing behind it, or a person who carries a title without the substance of it. A cracked or leaking jug is read as a trust that does not hold: something given to a keeper who loses a little of it at every step. Pouring for others is read as service and generosity, and it is among the better readings in this chapter. Breaking a jug was read as the loss of a keeper or the ending of an arrangement, not as damage to property. A jug of something other than water takes its reading from the contents: milk, honey, oil and wine each carry their own, and the jug becomes only the container. Drinking from a jug offered by someone known shifts the dream onto what that person is providing you.

The reading rests on what a vessel is for. It holds nothing of its own; its whole worth is in keeping what was put in it and giving it up cleanly when asked, which is precisely the description of a trusted servant or a steward — and that is the association the interpreters worked with. The Qur'an's imagery of the vessels of Paradise, where cups and pitchers are carried round to the people there (al-Waqi'a 56:18), keeps the jug on the side of service rather than possession.

A dream of a jug is not a sign about money coming or going, and a broken one is not a warning about a person in your household. It is not a ruling and not news of anything. Thirst alone will produce a dream of water and vessels. If it left you uneasy, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and keep it to yourself.
