Dreaming of Jumping in Islam

Jumping is read by what is jumped over, from where to where, and whether the landing holds. Jumping over an obstacle and landing well is the plain good reading: a difficulty cleared in one move rather than worked through. Jumping down from a height is read as leaving a position — and whether that reads as escape or as loss depends on where the dreamer lands, which is why the older interpreters always asked about the landing before anything else. Jumping up to reach something is read as an ambition that requires an effort out of proportion to the dreamer's ordinary footing. Jumping from one place to another over a gap is read as a change of situation with nothing in between: a move made without the usual steps. Jumping and falling short turns toward a matter attempted before its means were ready — and the interpreters read it as a call to prepare, not as a refusal. Jumping for joy is read as its own plain meaning, relief arriving.

There is no Arabic idiom under this and it would be dishonest to manufacture one. The interpreters connected jumping to sudden transition for the reason the act itself supplies: a jump is the one way of moving that has no middle. The walker can stop; the jumper cannot. That is why the reading always turns on the landing, and why the same dream reads as boldness or as recklessness depending on where the dreamer's feet come down.

A jumping dream is not a sign that a decision is right and not a warning against taking one. It is no ruling, and no plan should be committed to or abandoned on the strength of it. A person weighing a leap in waking life will dream one; that is the ordinary traffic of sleep and not a message. Should this dream have unsettled you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and leave it untold.
