Dreaming of Kitchen in Islam

A kitchen is read by what is in it and by who is working there. A kitchen with a fire lit and food cooking is the settled good reading: a household whose affairs are being attended to, provision that is being turned into something usable. A cold kitchen, or one with no fire is read as a household matter left unattended rather than as poverty. An empty larder points to a want that the dreamer has not yet spoken about. Food burning or spoiling on the fire is read as a good mismanaged — the means were there and something in the handling went wrong, which is why the older interpreters read it as a call to look at the handling. Cooking for guests is read as generosity and as a standing among people. A stranger cooking in the dreamer's kitchen shifts the reading onto someone taking a hand in his household affairs. A kitchen that is clean and in order is read as the same order in the family's dealings; one in disarray as confusion in them.

No idiom is needed here and none should be manufactured. The interpreters connected the kitchen to the state of the household for the plain reason the room supplies: it is the place where what has been earned outside becomes what the family actually lives on. Fire, water, provision and work all meet in one room, and every one of those is read elsewhere in the tradition — which is why a kitchen dream is usually read by whichever of them the dream put in front.

A dream of an empty kitchen is not a warning of hard times and a full one is not a promise of ease. It carries no ruling and tells nothing of what is coming. Household worry — bills, feeding people, a family under strain — produces this dream more readily than anything else. If the dream left you uneasy, the taught response holds: seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it to anyone.
