Dreaming of Knocking in Islam

Knocking is read by who knocks, how it sounds, and whether the door opens. Someone knocking and being let in is the settled good reading: news arriving, a request that will be granted, a matter that finds its way to you rather than having to be chased. Knocking that goes unanswered is read as a matter still waiting on someone else, and the older interpreters read it as a call to patience rather than as a refusal. The dreamer himself knocking shifts the reading — he is the one asking, and whether the door opens is read as whether the request is placed where it can be answered. Gentle, measured knocking is read favourably; violent hammering as a demand pressed harder than it should be, or a matter arriving with alarm attached. Knocking heard at night was read as news that comes suddenly, of either kind, and the interpreters refused to make it necessarily bad. A known person at the door shifts the dream onto that relationship. Knocking with no one there when the door is opened is read as an expectation that has not yet taken shape.

The basis is the plain practice rather than an idiom, though the practice itself is instructive: the manners of visiting in the tradition require permission to be sought before entering — the Qur'an instructs believers not to enter houses other than their own until they have asked leave and greeted the people in them (an-Nur 24:27). Knocking is therefore not merely a noise; it is the act of asking, and every reading above turns on whether the asking is answered.

A dream of knocking is not an announcement that news is on its way, good or bad, and it is not a ruling. Anyone waiting on a result, a message or a decision is likely to dream this from the waiting itself. Most of what a sleeper sees is his own day returning to him. If the sound in the dream frightened you, the response taught is simple: seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not tell it to anyone.
