A knife is read by its edge and by what it is turned on. A sharp knife carried, not used is the settled reading: a decisive argument, a proof in hand, or the ability to separate one thing cleanly from another. A blunt knife is a case that will not cut — a position held without anything to establish it. Cutting with a knife what is meant to be cut — food, cloth, a cord — is read as a matter resolved by a clean separation rather than a quarrel. A knife turned on a person turns the reading over entirely: that is severance in a relationship, and the interpreters read it as words rather than as harm to the body. Being given a knife is read as being handed the means to decide something; losing one as losing the standing to. A broken blade is read as a proof that failed at the moment it was needed. A knife used to cut what should not be cut — a rope holding something, a living branch — was read as a separation the dreamer will not be able to undo.
The Arabic lexicographers derive sikkin from the root of stillness, the knife being what stills what it is used on, and the interpretation follows the same logic: a knife ends a state. Beyond that the basis is the plain nature of the tool. A knife does not persuade, it divides; its whole worth is in an edge; and the same edge prepares food and severs a bond. That is why decisive proof and separation are one reading in this chapter rather than two.
A knife dream is not a warning of violence, not a diagnosis of anyone's intentions, and not an identification of a person. It is not a ruling, and no quarrel should be opened on the strength of it. Most of what is seen in sleep belongs to the sleeper's own day. If it frightened you, do what was taught: seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and keep it to yourself.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
