A ladder is read by its condition, by how far it reaches, and by whether the dreamer goes up or comes down. Climbing a sound ladder rung by rung is the settled good reading: a rise earned in order, without skipping what has to be passed through. A ladder that is broken, or missing rungs, is read as a means of advancement with a gap in it — the interpreters read the gap as something the dreamer already knows about. A ladder that leans on nothing, or reaches nowhere is read as effort spent on a rise that leads to no position. Coming down a ladder deliberately is read as a withdrawal chosen, and read better than falling; falling from one turns toward a standing lost through haste. Holding a ladder for someone else is read as raising another person, and the older readings treated that as better than climbing it oneself. A ladder of wood, cloth or rope — anything that gives under weight — is read as support that depends on someone else's goodwill rather than on the dreamer's own footing.
The Arabic sullam is already a word for a means, not only an object: the Qur'an uses it for a ladder into the heaven by which one might listen (at-Tur 52:38), where the point is precisely that it is the means to something out of reach. That is the sense the interpreters used. And the ordinary fact of the thing supports it: a ladder is the one way of rising that cannot be hurried, since every rung must be stood on.
A dream of climbing is not a promise of promotion, and a fall in a dream is not a warning of a setback. It carries no ruling and decides nothing about a job, a study, or a request that is pending. Ambition and anxiety about advancement both produce this dream on their own. If it disturbed you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and keep it to yourself.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
