Dreaming of Letter in Islam

A letter is read by who sent it, whether it is opened, and whether it can be read. A letter opened and read easily is read as news that will arrive plainly and be understood — good or otherwise, the clarity is the reading. A sealed letter is read as something still withheld: a matter known to someone else and not yet to you. A letter one cannot read — the writing unclear, a language unknown — is read as news that will arrive without its meaning, or advice given that the dreamer is not ready to take. A letter from someone known shifts the whole dream onto that relationship and onto what stands unsaid between you. A letter that is torn or burnt is read as a matter closed, and the older interpreters read the dreamer's own hand in that — who ended it. Writing a letter is read as an intention forming, and not sending it as an intention held back.

The Arabic risāla comes from the root that means to send: the same root gives rasūl, one who is sent. A letter in the language is not paper but a message entrusted to travel, which is why the interpreters read the sender and the arrival rather than the object. The Qur'an gives a letter a decisive part in a narrative: Sulayman's letter is carried to the queen of Sheba, and she calls it a noble letter when it reaches her (an-Naml 27:29).

A dream of a letter is not news, and nothing in it should be treated as information about a real person's intentions. Do not confront anyone because a letter in a dream carried their name. It is not a ruling, and it foretells nothing. Waiting on an answer — from a job, a family member, a hospital — produces this dream more reliably than any meaning does. If it left you anxious, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it.
