Dreaming of Light in Islam

Light is read by its source, its strength, and where it falls. A light that shows the way — a lamp carried, a road lit ahead — is the settled reading: guidance, knowledge, a matter becoming clear after confusion. Light filling a house is read as good in the household and in the family rather than in the dreamer alone. Light in the hand is read as knowledge one can pass on, or an authority one is given to use. A light that is weak, guttering, or going out is read as guidance one is letting slip, or a clarity that has not yet held — the older interpreters read it as a call to tend it, not as a loss already final. Light behind you while the way ahead is dark was read as relying on something already past. Sudden light in a dark place is relief after constriction, and it carries the same reading whether the dreamer is walking, praying, or simply looking.

Nothing in this chapter is more directly drawn from the text. The Qur'an makes light the standing image of guidance and darkness the image of its absence: Allah brings the believers out of the darknesses into the light (al-Baqara 2:257), and the famous verse of light describes a lamp within glass to picture that guidance (an-Nur 24:35). The symbol was not invented by dream interpreters; they inherited it already fixed.

A dream of light is not a certificate. It does not establish that the dreamer is guided, and the interpreters warned specifically against a person reading his own standing out of a pleasing dream. It is not a ruling and it foretells nothing. A good dream is a comfort and no more, and the honest use of it is gratitude rather than conclusion. If instead you saw the light go out and it distressed you, do what is taught for any troubling dream: seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and leave it untold.
