About this dream

Moon in a dream — what does it mean in Islam?

The moon is read by its phase, its brightness, and where it is seen. A full moon, clear and high is the settled good reading: a just authority, a scholar whose word is followed, or a spouse of beauty and standing. A crescent is a matter at its beginning — something that will grow if it is left to grow, and the older readings tie it to news arriving with a new month. A waning or eclipsed moon turns toward an authority in difficulty, a reputation dimming, or guidance that has become hard to see by. The moon entering a house is read as honour arriving in that household, and it is one of the readings given for a marriage. Moonlight showing the road at night is read as enough guidance for the step in front of you rather than for the whole way. The moon fallen from the sky was read gravely, as the loss of the one people were arranged around.

Moon: where does this meaning come from?

Two things are genuinely behind it. The moon has no light of its own: it is lit by the sun, so the interpreters made it the deputy where the sun is the source — the minister rather than the ruler, the mother beside the father. And in Arabic a beautiful face is called a badr, a full moon, which is an ordinary idiom and not a dream invention. The family reading comes from the text itself: in Surah Yusuf 12:4 the sun, the moon and eleven stars are seen bowing, and the household is what they stood for.

Moon in a dream — is it a bad sign?

A dream of the moon announces no marriage, and a darkened moon is no warning about anyone's death or downfall. It is not a ruling and it foretells nothing. If what you saw left you uneasy, do what is taught for any troubling dream: seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and keep it to yourself.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
