About this dua

When. When facing people whose intent toward you is hostile, and the confrontation is not one you chose. The Prophet ﷺ said it when he feared a group, and the wording keeps that setting: it is plural, said by people who are together in the same difficulty.

The words. Najʿaluka fī nuḥūrihim is the image the sentence turns on, and no English rendering carries it. Naḥr is the base of the throat — the place a camel is slaughtered, the place a blow lands, the front of a person. To "place You at their throats" is to put Allah between you and them at exactly the point where they would come at you. Not a shield held up in general, but something set in the path of the specific thing advancing.

Wa naʿūdhu bika min shurūrihim — the second half asks for refuge from their evil, not for harm to them. The distinction runs through the supplication: it seeks protection and stops there.

What it does not say. There is no request for the other party to be destroyed, humiliated or repaid. A reader looking for that will not find it here, and the omission is the supplication's character rather than an oversight.

Practical. It is said as the situation arrives rather than as a daily portion, and it requires nothing before it.
