About this dream

Adhan (Call to Prayer) in a dream — what does it mean in Islam?

The adhan is read by who calls it, where, and whether it is answered. Hearing a clear adhan at its proper time is the settled good reading: a call to something true, a matter whose time has come, an invitation the dreamer would do well to accept. Giving the adhan oneself is read as calling others to a good, and in the older readings as a position of trust — the caller stands where everyone can hear him. Calling it out of time, or in a place where it is not called, was read as speaking a truth where no one is ready to receive it, or as haste in a matter. Hearing it and going to answer it completes the reading; hearing it and not moving was read as a good offered and left. An adhan that is broken, garbled, or unfinished points to a call one cannot make out — a decision on which the dreamer has not yet been given enough to go on. Hearing it from an unseen caller was treated favourably throughout.

Adhan (Call to Prayer): where does this meaning come from?

The word adhān comes from the root for announcing and making known — the same root as idhn, permission, and udhun, the ear. It is by nature an announcement addressed to whoever will hear it. That is the whole basis of the reading: it is not a private message but a public summons, which is why the interpreters read it as a call, and why the question they asked of the dream was always whether the sleeper answered it.

Adhan (Call to Prayer) in a dream — is it a bad sign?

Hearing the adhan in sleep is not a summons to Hajj, not proof that a supplication was answered, and not a mark of the dreamer's standing. It settles no religious question; obligations are known from the law, not from sleep. Most of what is seen at night is the day returning, and a person who prays five times has heard this sound thousands of times. If any dream leaves you troubled, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
