An angel is read by where it appears and what it does. Angels descending on a place — a house, a town, a gathering — is read as safety and blessing settling on that place rather than on any one person. An angel that greets the dreamer or gives him something is the strongest of the good readings: reassurance, or a matter about to be made easy. An angel that says nothing and only stands has been read as a state being witnessed rather than announced. Angels in a house of mourning or over a sick person the older interpreters approached with great care, and the careful ones refused to read it as anything about the person's term of life. Seeing oneself as an angel was read as rising in standing, and also, by some, as taking on more than a man is given to carry — the two readings sit side by side and the dream's own feeling separates them. An angel that appears angry or turns away is read as a warning about the dreamer's own conduct, not as a verdict on him.
The Arabic malak is bound to the sense of a messenger sent, not an ornament: the angel in the Qur'an descends carrying something — a command, a tiding, a reassurance. The Qur'an describes angels descending upon those who stand firm on their Lord, telling them not to fear or grieve (Fussilat 41:30), and that image of arriving comfort is the one the interpretations follow.
A dream of an angel is not a rank, not proof of piety, and not a message given to you. The interpreters were firm that no one's standing with Allah is established by what he sees in sleep, and a good dream is at most encouragement. It settles no question of religion or law. If a dream of this kind disturbed you rather than comforted you, the taught response holds: seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it to anyone.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
