Dreaming of Airplane in Islam

An airplane is read by the flight rather than by the machine. Boarding and flying calmly is read as a change of state entered deliberately — a move, a new work, a matter that will carry you further than your own effort would. Flying very high has been read as ambition, and by the more cautious readings as ambition beyond what the ground under it will support. A rough or frightening flight is read as a transition being made under strain rather than as danger. Missing the flight is read as an opportunity passing, and the interpreters treated that as a matter of timing rather than of loss. Landing safely is the reading everyone wants and the one the tradition treats as decisive: whatever the flight was, the arrival settles it. Watching a plane from the ground shifts the dream onto someone else's departure and your own remaining.

This is a modern symbol and it is honest to say so. There is no classical entry for an aircraft; what the older material reads is flight itself, and it reads it in two directions — rising above one's circumstances, and being carried by something that is not under your own power. An airplane joins both, which is why the same dream can feel like freedom and like helplessness. Nothing older than that should be claimed for it.

A dream of a plane is not a warning about a journey, and no traveller should cancel anything on account of one. It is not a ruling and it foretells nothing. Fear of flying, a booked trip, and a long day of news all produce this dream by themselves. If it frightened you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and leave it untold.
