Dreaming of Ax in Islam

An ax is read by its condition and by what it is used on. A sharp, well-hafted ax is the good reading: a helper who is equal to the work, or a means by which a stuck matter is finally opened. A blunt ax, or one whose head comes off the handle, is read as help that arrives without strength in it — the intention present, the capacity not. Being given an ax is read as being handed the means to act; losing one as the means being withdrawn. Using it to cut firewood is read as work that yields something usable, and using it on a living, fruit-bearing tree the older readings treated much less kindly: a benefit cut off at the root. An ax raised against the dreamer turns the reading over entirely — that is force being brought against him, and the interpreters read the outcome in the dream, not the threat. An ax used to break a door open has been read as forcing a matter that could have been entered another way.

There is no idiom underneath this one and it is better not to invent one. The interpreters connected the ax to the strong helper for the plain reason the thing itself gives: it is the tool brought in when the hand alone will not do, it does its work by force rather than by patience, and it is as good as its edge. Its double reading — deliverance or destruction — is simply the fact that the same blade clears a path and fells what was standing.

A dream of an ax is not a warning of violence and it identifies no one. It is not a ruling, and no course of action should be settled on it. The tradition places the true dream as one kind among several, and most of what a sleeper sees belongs to his own day and his own worry.
