Dreaming of Camel in Islam

A camel is read by whether it is under control, and by what it is carrying. A docile camel led by its rein is the settled reading: a strong man whose strength is at your disposal, a long undertaking that will hold, or patience itself. Riding a camel is read as travel, or as taking on a matter that will take time — the camel is the animal of distance, not of speed. A laden camel is read as a burden being carried rather than a burden imposed. An agitated or bolting camel turns the reading over: a strength that has gone out of hand, or a man of standing who has become an opponent. A camel that kneels for the dreamer is a difficulty submitting; one that refuses to rise is an undertaking that will not begin. Camel's milk is read separately and favourably, as lawful provision and as benefit drawn from something demanding. A slaughtered camel the older interpreters read as a large matter concluded, and would not read further than that.

The association is not decorative. The camel is the animal an Arabian life was actually built on — carriage, milk, wealth counted in head, and the only creature that made long distance survivable — and the Qur'an points to it directly, asking whether they do not look at the camels, how they were created (al-Ghashiya 88:17). Patience attaches to it for the plain reason that it endures what nothing else endures, and a strong man is described by it because it carries what a household needs carried.

A camel dream is not news of a journey, not an identification of any particular man, and not a ruling. Reading it as a named person has caused more damage than benefit. The tradition places the true dream as one kind among several, and most of what is seen belongs to the sleeper's own concerns. If the dream troubled you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it.
