Dreaming of Cat in Islam

A cat is read by its temper and by where it is. A calm cat in the house is read as someone inside the household — a servant, a helper, a member of the family who keeps watch over what is there. A cat that scratches or bites turns the reading toward a quarrel with someone close, or a person nearby whose friendliness is not reliable. A cat catching mice is read favourably: something in the household is being guarded, and a loss is being prevented before it happens. Driving a cat out of the house has been read as removing a person or a habit that was taking from the household quietly. A stray or unknown cat shifts the reading outward, to someone who comes and goes without belonging. A cat that appears at night, or one whose eyes are fixed on the dreamer, is read as a matter being watched more closely than the dreamer realises. Feeding a cat was read as maintaining someone dependent on you, and the older readings treated that kindly.

The reading rests on the plain nature of the animal rather than on any idiom. The cat lives inside the house without being of the household, takes from it and guards it at the same time, is fed and yet not owned, and gives affection on its own terms. Every one of the interpretations — the servant, the guard, the cunning near-companion — is a reading of that one fact.

A cat dream identifies no one, and using it to suspect a particular person in your house is precisely the misuse the interpreters warned against. It is not a ruling and not a prediction of a falling-out. Someone who lives with a cat will dream of one for no reason at all. If the dream unsettled you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and keep it to yourself.

A cat that scratches or bites turns the reading toward a quarrel with someone close, or toward a person nearby whose friendliness cannot be relied on. It rests on the animal's own nature rather than any borrowed idiom — a cat lives inside the house without being of the household, and takes from it even as it seems to belong there. It identifies no one specific, and using it to suspect a particular person in your home is exactly the misuse the interpreters warned against.
