A crown is read by whose head it sits on and by how it was come by. Wearing a crown that fits and stays is the good reading: standing among people, an office entered rightly, a matter in which you are given the last word. A crown that is too large, or slips off, is read as a position taken on beyond one's capacity, or held without the ground under it. Being crowned by someone known shifts the dream onto that person and onto what they have handed you. Taking a crown by force is read badly throughout — authority sought rather than given. Seeing a crown on someone else is read as their standing, and the dreamer's own feeling about it — relief, or resentment — is part of the reading. For a woman, the older interpreters commonly read a crown as a husband or a marriage in which she is honoured, and they were reading the ornament as the standing it brings rather than as the object. A broken or fallen crown points to authority lost or a station given up, not to disgrace.
No etymology should be invented here. The Arabic tāj is itself a borrowing, and the Qur'an gives no crown to anyone. The interpreters connected it to rank for the plain reason the thing carries: it is worn on the head, it is worn by one and looked at by many, and it is the single object whose whole purpose is to say who is in charge. Everything read from it follows from that and from nothing older.
A dream of a crown is not an appointment, not a proposal, and not news about anyone's future position. It is not a ruling. Ambition and a difficult week at work produce this dream reliably enough on their own. Do not read a person's worth — your own or another's — from what appeared on a head in sleep. If the dream troubled you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and keep it to yourself.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
