Dreaming of Crying in Islam

Crying is read almost entirely by how it happened. Quiet weeping without wailing is the good reading throughout the tradition: relief, a burden lifting, sorrow that is on its way out rather than on its way in. Loud crying, wailing, tearing at oneself reverses it — that is grief taken badly, and the sources treat the manner of mourning as its own matter, separate from the grief itself. Tears without sound are read as mercy; crying with no tears at all as a distress that has not yet found its release. Crying in a mosque or in prayer is read as the best of the readings. Seeing someone else cry shifts the dream onto that person and onto your concern for them.

The reversal — that weeping means relief — is not a trick of interpretation. It follows the plain observation the tradition makes about grief: what is wept out is discharged, and what is held is not. The distinction between quiet tears and wailing runs through the sources on mourning as well, where the tears themselves are never blamed and the wailing is.

A crying dream is not a prediction of a bereavement, and reading it that way inverts what the tradition actually says about it. Most of what is seen in sleep belongs to the sleeper's own day — and a person who went to bed carrying something will often dream it out.
