Dreaming of Eating in Islam

Eating is read by what is eaten, where it came from, and who eats with the dreamer. Eating good, wholesome food with appetite is the settled reading: lawful provision received and enjoyed. Eating spoiled, rotten or foul food reverses it toward gain from a doubtful source, or a benefit that will not agree with the one who took it. Eating alone what was meant for others, or snatching from a shared dish, is read as taking more than one's portion. Eating with people, or feeding them, is among the best readings in the chapter — provision that increases by being shared. Eating without ever being satisfied points to a want that food is not the answer to: ambition, or a lack that keeps its shape however much is put into it. Eating something that cannot be eaten — earth, stone, raw meat — the older interpreters read as consuming what is not yours to consume, most often another's reputation. Refusing food that is offered has been read as declining a benefit, or as guarding oneself from an obligation attached to it.

The vocabulary is already in the language of the sources: eating stands for consuming in the wide sense, and the Qur'an uses it exactly that way — those who consume the wealth of orphans are described as eating fire into their bellies (an-Nisa 4:10). Backbiting is likewise given the image of eating. So a dream of eating is read as a dream about what a person takes in, and about whether he had a right to it.

This dream is not a judgement about the dreamer's earnings and does not declare anything lawful or unlawful. It is not a ruling — that question is settled by knowledge, not by sleep. Going to bed hungry, or full, produces this dream on its own. If it left you troubled, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it to anyone.
