The elephant is read by its temper and by the dreamer's position relative to it. A calm elephant that obeys is read as a great matter or a powerful man brought into order. Riding one is the strongest of the good readings: authority over something large, or a rank reached that others can see. An elephant that will not be led turns toward a matter too big for the means the dreamer has brought to it. Being trampled or charged is read as being caught under a power one cannot argue with — and the older interpreters read the escape or the injury in the dream, not the fear. Owning one, or being given one, was read as a weighty responsibility rather than as a gift, since the animal costs more to keep than it returns. An elephant in a place too small for it is a plain reading of something disproportionate: the right thing in the wrong setting.
The elephant is not native to the readings' own landscape, and that is part of the association — it enters Arabic memory as something foreign and overwhelming. The Qur'an names a surah al-Fil after the army of the elephant and its undoing, and that account gives the symbol its two sides at once: great force, and great force stopped. The interpreters read strength in it, and also the limit of strength, and the older readings were noticeably reluctant to treat it as simple good news.
A dream of an elephant is not a statement about any ruler, employer or rival, and identifying a person from it is exactly the misuse the careful interpreters warned against. It is no ruling and no forecast. Fear of someone with power over you produces this dream without needing any meaning behind it. If it frightened you, the answer is the one taught for every frightening dream: seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it to anyone.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
