Dreaming of Gift in Islam

A gift is read by who gives it, what it is, and whether it is accepted. Receiving a gift from someone known is read as goodwill from that person, and where there has been a rift, as reconciliation coming from their side. Giving a gift is read as the dreamer's own intention toward someone, and the older interpreters weighed it higher than receiving. A gift refused, or returned is read as a closeness that has not been allowed to settle — again, a matter of the relationship, not of the object. What the gift is carries its own reading and often the stronger one: clothes as honour and covering, food as provision, a ring as a commitment, a weapon as strength given. A gift from an unknown giver is read as good arriving from a direction one was not watching. A broken or worthless gift is read as words of affection without weight behind them.

The Arabic hadiyya comes from the root h-d-y, the same root that gives hidāya, guidance — the sense underneath both is directing something toward someone. A gift, in the language, is a thing sent in someone's direction, and that is exactly what the interpreters read from it: not the object but the movement between two people. The Qur'an uses the word in that social sense directly, when the queen of Sheba sends a gift to test Sulayman's intent (an-Naml 27:35).

A dream of a gift is not news that something is coming to you, and it is not an obligation on the person you dreamed of. It is not a ruling. Do not go to someone claiming a dream gave you a right, and do not read a cooling friendship as repaired because a dream said so — the repair is done awake. If the dream unsettled you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and leave it untold.
