About this dream

Green (color) in a dream — what does it mean in Islam?

Green is read by what is green and by how it is worn or seen. Wearing green clothing is among the best readings in the whole chapter: a good state, a matter that is sound, and in the older readings a person whose religion is in order. Green plants or a green land are read as blessing settling on a place, and on livelihood in particular. Green appearing after dryness carries the strongest reading of all — relief arriving where it had been given up on. Being given something green is read as receiving what the colour stands for rather than possessing it already. Green that is dark, dulled or turning is read as a good in decline rather than as an evil. Seeing someone known dressed in green shifts the reading onto that person's state, and the interpreters were careful here, refusing to read it as a report on anyone who has died. Green water or green sky are read by their own symbols first — the colour does not override what the thing itself is.

Green (color): where does this meaning come from?

This one is anchored in the text and needs no embellishment. The Qur'an describes the people of the Garden as wearing green garments of fine silk (al-Kahf 18:31, al-Insan 76:21) and describes them reclining on green cushions (ar-Rahman 55:76). Beyond that, in a land where green meant that rain had come, the colour was already the visible form of mercy before any interpreter touched it.

Green (color) in a dream — is it a bad sign?

Seeing green is not a certificate of anything, and it says nothing about where the dreamer or anyone else stands with Allah. The interpreters were firmest on exactly this point: no one's standing is established by a dream, and a good dream is at most encouragement to continue. It carries no ruling. If a dream troubled you rather than gladdened you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and leave it untold.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
