Dreaming of Glass in Islam

Glass is read by whether it is whole, what is in it, and how it is handled. Clear glass, unbroken is read as a matter whose inside is visible — an affair with nothing concealed in it, or a life that will not bear rough handling. Drinking from a glass vessel is read as a benefit received in a form that must be carried carefully. Glass breaking in the hand is read as something fragile that was held too tightly; glass broken when it was already empty was read more lightly by the older interpreters, and sometimes as the end of a worry rather than a loss. Walking on broken glass is read as a path taken at a cost, step by step. Glass that looks like something more valuable — taken for a jewel — is read as a claim or a person appearing to be worth more than they are. Repairing or gathering up glass is read as trying to restore what does not restore easily, and the interpreters read it as a call to gentleness beforehand rather than after.

Two real things sit under this. Glass shows what is inside it and breaks completely rather than partly — it is the standing image of something valuable that cannot be mended once mishandled, which is why the tradition uses qawārīr, glass vessels, when urging gentleness with those who are easily hurt. And the Qur'an itself uses glass for the clarity that lets a light through: the lamp in a glass, likened to a brilliant star, in the verse of light (an-Nur 24:35).

A dream of breaking glass is not a warning of an accident, a divorce, or a death, and reading it that way has frightened people for no reason. It is neither a ruling nor news of what will happen. If it disturbed you, the response taught for any distressing dream applies: seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not tell it to anyone.
