Dreaming of Grave in Islam

A grave is read by what the dreamer does at it, and the readings are far less grim than the image. Visiting a grave is read as a reminder taken to heart, and the interpreters treated it as one of the better dreams in this chapter: a person recalling where things end tends to correct something. Digging a grave was read as building or settling something for oneself, since a person who digs is preparing a place rather than filling one. Entering a grave and coming out is read as leaving a confinement — the older readings pair the grave with the prison and with seclusion, and coming out of it is release. A grave that is spacious and lit is read favourably; a narrow, dark one as a constriction the dreamer is in now. Seeing a grave in one's house was read as a withdrawal from people rather than as a death in the family. Not finding a grave one is looking for was read as a matter one cannot get to the bottom of.

The grave in the sources is not primarily an image of death but of the interval and of remembrance. The Qur'an makes visiting the graves the endpoint of a life spent competing for more (al-Takathur 102:1-2), and visiting them is encouraged in the practice of the community precisely because it restores proportion. The interpreters' second reading — the grave as a prison, a narrow place, seclusion — comes from its plain shape: an enclosed space one enters alone.

This is a dream people wake from certain someone is going to die, and that is exactly what it is not. A dream of a grave is not a death notice, not a diagnosis, and not a summons. It is not a ruling. Grief, an illness in the family, and a recent burial all produce it on their own, and the tradition is clear that most of what is seen at night belongs to the sleeper's own day. If it frightened you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it to anyone.
