Dreaming of Qibla in Islam

The reading is almost entirely about orientation. Facing the qibla and praying is the plain favourable form, read as being rightly set in a matter, whether or not the matter is a religious one. Searching for the qibla and not finding it is the form people most often dream, and the older interpreters read it as a decision the dreamer has not yet settled rather than as a fault in religion. Being told the direction by someone shifts the reading onto counsel: what is needed is not effort but information. Praying and then realising the direction was wrong is read as a matter reconsidered, and it was not treated as a condemnation; the ruling in waking life for one who strives and errs is well known and gentle. A crowd facing one way and the dreamer another is read as isolation in a position, which may be an error or may be a correction. The qibla seen from far away, or the Kaaba glimpsed is read as longing.

The qibla is the one matter in which direction itself was made an act of worship. Al-Baqara 2:144 records the turning of the face toward the Sacred Mosque, and the same surah at 2:148 says that each has a direction he turns toward. So in Arabic religious usage direction is never merely geometry: it is intention made visible. The dream reading follows from that and not from anything symbolic about compass points.

This dream is not a verdict on your religion and not a sign that your prayer is or is not accepted. It resolves no question about what you should do, and no dream ever settles a matter of ruling; that is what scholars and evidence are for. Anyone who has recently prayed in an unfamiliar place, or travelled, will dream of hunting for the qibla with no meaning attached.
