Stairs are read by the direction, the condition of the steps, and whether the climb is willing. Climbing steadily to the top is read as advance earned in stages — in standing, in work, or in the discipline of a person's religion. Climbing and finding the stairs never end is read as effort without a visible finish, the state of striving with no reachable measure. Missing a step or stumbling is read as a lapse within a course that is otherwise sound, not as collapse. Descending willingly is read as stepping back from a position, sometimes as relief. Descending against your will, or falling down stairs, is read as a loss of footing in something you had climbed to, and the older interpretations read it by what waited at the bottom. Broken or missing steps are read as a route with a gap in it: a plan whose middle is not built. Carrying someone up is read as raising another at your own cost.
The basis is simply the form of the thing: a staircase permits no jumps. Height is reached only by taking each step in order, and that ordered, unhurried gain is what the interpreters used it for — rank, learning and worship all being things the tradition treats as accumulating by repetition rather than by a single leap.
This is not news about a promotion, a demotion, a fall or anyone's fortune, and it decides nothing. Physical tiredness, a real staircase in the house, ambition or dread about a change at work will each make this dream. If the fall frightened you — and a falling dream often does — the guidance is unchanged: seek refuge in Allah from its harm, turn onto your other side, and do not repeat it to people.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
