The sun is read by its state and by what the dreamer does with it. A clear, risen sun is the settled good reading: authority, a father, a ruler, or a truth that has become plain. Sunrise is a matter beginning or a relief arriving; sunset the ending of a state or the passing of an authority. An eclipsed or darkened sun turns toward a power in difficulty, or a clarity lost. The sun rising from the west is read gravely in the tradition, since it belongs to the signs of the Hour rather than to ordinary symbolism. Holding or possessing the sun has been read as coming under, or into, authority. Its heat without light is hardship without benefit.
The reading rests on what the sun does rather than on invention: it is the thing everything else is seen by. Arabic and the Qur'anic imagery both place it as the source that makes matters visible — ash-shams is feminine in Arabic, and the seventy-fifth verse-group of Surah ash-Shams swears by it and by its brightness. The association with a father or a ruler follows from the same place: the one under whose light a household or a people is arranged.
A dream of the sun is not news about anyone's rank, and a darkened sun is not a warning about a person's death or fall. It is not a ruling and not a prediction. If the dream unsettled you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and leave it untold.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
