Dreaming of Thirst in Islam

Thirst is read by whether it is relieved and by what relieves it. Thirst quenched with clear, cold water is the settled favourable form: a need answered, an unclear matter made plain, understanding that arrives. Thirst that will not go however much is drunk reverses it — seeking satisfaction from something that cannot give it, which the older interpreters read as a want misdirected rather than as deprivation. Being thirsty while water is in sight but out of reach is read as knowing where the answer lies and being kept from it by something. Giving water to someone thirsty turns the reading outward, and was read as one of the plainest images of benefit given. Drinking from muddy or salt water points to relief taken from a doubtful source, satisfying at the moment and not after. Thirst in a crowd where no one else is thirsty was read as a need particular to the dreamer, not shared by those around him.

The link between drinking and knowledge is carried by the Arabic itself: the root that gives rayy, being fully quenched, is the same root that gives riwaya, the transmission of a report, and a narrator is a rawi. To take knowledge and to take one's fill of water are described with one family of words, which is why the interpreters read thirst as longing for what settles the heart. The plain fact reinforces it: thirst is the one need that only its own answer satisfies.

This is not a diagnosis, not a sign about the body, and not a forecast of any relief or its withholding. Fasting, sleeping in a dry room, illness, medication and simple dehydration all produce thirst dreams directly, and the tradition holds that most of what is seen in sleep comes from the sleeper's own state.
