About this dream

Tree in a dream — what does it mean in Islam?

A tree is read as a person, and its state describes that person's standing. A tree in fruit is the settled favourable form: someone whose benefit reaches others without their asking, and whose good is visible rather than claimed. A tree with strong roots but no fruit is read as standing that has not yet been useful — real, but not productive. A tree cut down or uprooted turns the reading toward the loss of such a person or of a support the dreamer had leaned on; the interpreters read uprooting as a thing removed from its foundation rather than merely damaged. Sitting or sheltering in a tree's shade is read as protection and rest received from someone else's standing. Planting a tree is work whose benefit is set beyond the present, deliberately. A dead or thorn-bearing tree was read as a person from whom harm comes where good was expected, and this was one of the few readings the older sources gave without hedging.

Tree: where does this meaning come from?

The parable is Qur'anic and explicit. In Ibrahim 14:24 a good word is likened to a good tree whose root is firm and whose branches reach the sky, giving its fruit at all times by its Lord's permission, and the following verse sets against it a bad word like a bad tree torn from the ground with no stability. That passage gives the whole framework the interpreters used: roots for what a person is founded on, branches for reach, fruit for benefit that others actually receive.

Tree in a dream — is it a bad sign?

No dream of a tree names a person, and none of this is a ruling or a prediction. A falling tree is not news about anyone's life, however heavily it landed on the dreamer. Bereavement, an ill relative, a garden, or a storm the night before will each produce the image on their own, and most of what is seen in sleep is the sleeper's own day coming back. If it left you afraid, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
