Dreaming of Travel in Islam

Travel is read by the preparation more than by the destination. Setting out with provisions packed is the favourable form, read as a change entered into deliberately. Travelling without luggage, or realising you have brought nothing is one of the most commonly reported forms, and the older interpreters read it as a change arriving faster than the dreamer's readiness for it, not as a warning of loss. Missing a departure is read as hesitation rather than as a chance gone; the interpreters generally turned it back on the dreamer's own delaying. Travelling with companions shifts the reading onto those people and how they behave on the road, which is where the whole symbol has its force. Returning home from travel is read favourably as a matter completing. Being lost in an unfamiliar place is read as circumstances the dreamer does not yet have the language for. Travel to a place of pilgrimage is read as longing and inclination rather than as an announcement.

Arabic itself makes the connection. The word for travel, safar, shares its root with the verb meaning to uncover or lay bare, the same root behind a face unveiled and a dawn breaking clear. This is why travel is spoken of in Arabic as the thing that reveals the character of the men you go with: not because journeys are eventful, but because the word already means uncovering. The dream books read it exactly on that sense, which is why the companions matter more than the country.

This dream is not news of a journey to come, and it does not mean you should or should not take one you are considering. It carries no ruling and settles nothing about anyone you dreamt travelling with. Visa paperwork, a plan half-made, or homesickness will each produce it. If the dream left you afraid, seek refuge in Allah from its harm, turn onto your other side, and do not tell it to anyone.
