A bird is read by its kind, its colour, and above all by what it does. A bird flying high and freely is read as an aspiration that has room to rise, or news travelling. A bird settling on you or entering the house is read as something arriving — and whether it is welcome follows the bird: a clean, well-formed bird brings good, a black or foul one brings a word you will not want. Catching a bird is read as attaining what was pursued; a bird escaping the hand as an opportunity that did not stay. A caged bird turns the reading toward a soul held back — a talent unused, a person confined by circumstance. Birds gathering in numbers were read as people assembling, for a matter good or bad according to their appearance. A bird speaking is read as news arriving plainly. Killing a bird was read as putting an end to something one had been chasing, and the older readings do not treat it as good.
The Arabic carries the association by itself. Ṭāʾir means a bird, and it also means a person's portion of what befalls them — the Qur'an uses the word in exactly that sense, fastening each person's ṭāʾir to their own neck (al-Isra 17:13) and correcting those who read omens in flight by telling them their ṭāʾir is with Allah (al-A'raf 7:131). So a bird in a dream sits on a word that already meant news and fortune before any interpreter touched it. Height and flight supply the rest: what rises is aspiration, and what carries is a message.
A bird in a dream is not an omen, and the Qur'an's own correction of omen-reading is the reason to say so. It does not carry news of an event and it settles no ruling. Most of what a sleeper sees is the residue of the day. If the dream disquieted you, the response taught is to seek refuge in Allah, turn to your other side, and leave it unspoken.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
