Dreaming of Bridge in Islam

A bridge is read by its state and by whether the crossing is completed. Crossing a firm bridge and reaching the other side is the settled good reading: a passage out of one condition into another, a hardship gone through rather than avoided. A narrow, swaying or broken bridge shifts the reading to a passage attempted without what it requires — and the interpreters read the outcome in the dream, not the fear during it. Stopping in the middle and turning back is read as a matter left undecided rather than as failure. Building or repairing a bridge has been read as making a way for others, or as reconciling two sides that had no way between them. Falling from a bridge is read as the loss of the means of passage rather than as harm to the body. Crossing at night, or unable to see the far bank, is entering something whose end is not visible — which is a description of the dreamer's situation, not a verdict on how it ends.

The bridge needs no invented basis: it is the only thing in ordinary life that exists solely to get you across something you could not otherwise cross. The tradition's descriptions of the Hereafter make a crossing the image of passing from this life to what follows, and that imagery stands behind the weight the older readings give to whether the crossing was completed. In Arabic the word for a bridge is used the same way it is in English — a means of reaching, and a means of joining two things that were apart.

A dream of a bridge, however frightening the crossing, is not a warning about a journey and is not a statement about anyone's standing in the Hereafter. It is not a ruling and no plan should be made or abandoned because of it. Most of what a sleeper sees is his own day returning to him. If the dream frightened you, do what was taught: seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and keep it to yourself.
