Bread is read by its state and by what is done with it. Fresh, warm bread is the settled reading: provision arriving in good condition, a livelihood that is enough and comes without strain. Dry or stale bread is read as sustenance that comes hard, or a living stretched thin. Burnt or bitter bread turns further, toward something earned from a source one would rather not name. Giving bread to others is read more favourably than eating it — the older interpreters put feeding above being fed. Buying or receiving bread is provision arriving from outside; baking it is provision produced by one's own work, and that reading is stronger. Bread taken away, or bread that cannot be reached, is read as a constriction in livelihood rather than as poverty itself. A great deal of bread stored up was read by some as security and by others as hoarding, and the dream's own feeling decides between them.
No etymology is needed here; the fact of the thing carries it. Bread is what a household eats every day, and in ordinary Arabic usage ʿaysh — literally living — is the everyday word for bread in Egypt and beyond. Dream interpretation is not what put bread and livelihood together; daily speech did. The Qur'an also gives bread a place in a dream directly: in the story of Yusuf, one of the two prisoners relates that he saw himself carrying bread on his head with birds eating from it (Yusuf 12:36).
A dream of bread is not a promise of money and a dream of empty hands is not a sentence of poverty. It is not a ruling, and no household decision belongs on it. Hunger, worry over rent and a hard month at work all make this dream on their own. If it left you uneasy, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
