Dreaming of Doctor in Islam

A doctor is read by what he does and by whether the dreamer is the patient. A doctor who examines and treats is read as someone who puts a disorder right — a teacher, a person of counsel, or an intervention that addresses a cause rather than a symptom. Being told you are well is read as reassurance in a matter you have been anxious about, and not as a report on your body. A doctor who cannot find the illness is read as a difficulty whose real cause has not yet been located, which the older interpreters treated as a call to look further rather than as bad news. Being the doctor yourself is read as being put in a position to set someone else's affair right, and to be careful of it. A doctor prescribing something bitter has been read as advice that is correct and unwelcome at once. Seeing a doctor turn away or refuse to treat is read as a helper who is out of reach, not as a sentence passed.

The association is a plain one, and it runs in the language: sickness and cure are the standing metaphor for what is wrong in a person and what corrects it. The Qur'an speaks of a sickness in the hearts of some people, and of the revelation itself as a healing for what is in the breasts (Yunus 10:57). Once illness stands for disorder in a person's state, the one who treats it stands for whoever repairs that state — which is why the interpreters read the doctor as a scholar or a wise counsellor rather than as a physician.

This dream reaches people who are ill or waiting on results, so it needs saying without softening: a dream of a doctor is not a diagnosis, not a prognosis, and not a sign about anyone's recovery. Illness is answered by treatment, and a dream neither confirms nor removes it. It carries no ruling. Worry about a real illness produces this dream more reliably than anything else does. If it frightened you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it to anyone.
