The dove is read by what it does and where it settles. A dove arriving and settling in the house is the good reading: news that puts a heart at rest, or a spouse who brings quiet with her. A dove carrying something, or coming from a distance, is read as word from someone far away — the older interpreters were plain that this is about news, and about waiting for it. A cooing dove was read two ways and the dream decides between them: comfort, or a complaint made softly and repeatedly. A caged dove is read as a household kept close, or a matter held back from where it wants to go. Releasing one is read as letting a matter take its course. A dove taken by a hawk or a cat turns the reading over: something gentle exposed to something that is not, and the interpreters read it as a need to protect rather than as a fate already fixed. A flock of doves was read as company and safety in numbers.
Two ordinary facts sit under this, not an etymology. The pigeon carried letters across the Muslim world for centuries — a real postal system, not a poetic image — which is exactly why the bird reads as news arriving. And the dove is defenceless and homing: it does not fight, and it returns. From those two habits come both halves of the reading, the beloved who returns and the news that arrives.
A dove in a dream announces no engagement, no letter and no reconciliation. It is not a ruling and it foretells nothing. Someone waiting on news will dream of its arrival without the dream being about anything but the waiting. If yours left you uneasy rather than comforted, the taught response stands: seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it to anyone.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
