A door is read by its state and by which way the dreamer passes through it. An open door is the settled good reading: a way made available, provision or an opportunity that is not being obstructed. A closed door is a matter delayed rather than refused, and the older interpreters were careful about that distinction. A locked door with no key is read as something the dreamer cannot open by his own means; finding the key as the means arriving. Entering through a door is read as taking up a new condition, and going out through one as leaving a state behind. A broken or removed door is read as a household or an affair left exposed, since the door is what makes a house private. A narrow door is read as an opening that exists but will require the dreamer to give something up to pass through it. Many doors, or not knowing which to take, is read as a choice, and the interpreters read the dream's own inclination rather than declaring one door the right one.
There is no hidden etymology here and it would be wrong to invent one. In ordinary Arabic bāb means both the physical door and the chapter, the category, the avenue by which something is approached — the way into a matter. The dream reading is that everyday sense: a door is not the destination but the access to it, which is why every variation above turns on whether access is available, delayed, or lost.
A dream of a closed door is not a refusal issued against you and a dream of an open one is not a guarantee of anything. Neither is a ruling, and no decision should be settled on either. The tradition counts the true dream as one kind among several and places most of what a sleeper sees with his own day. If the dream weighed on you, the response taught is to seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and not to relate it.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
